I cannot stop eating cereal
My friend Andy Bellatti writes what I consider one of the most useful blogs on the internet, Small Bites. Andy is currently enrolled in NYU’s Masters Program to become a Registered Dietitian. His tag line is “Confused about nutrition? I don’t blame you?” He gives clear, no bull advice for everything from soy to vitamins to an installment called “Shame On You” that calls out quacks who try to sell fad diets and reminds you just how many calories Del Taco feels comfortable selling for breakfast.
Recently Andy wrote a post about a new cereal company called [me] & Goji. It’s a small company put together by three guys who were just tired of the crappy cereal out there! They offer the option to mix and match ingredients and add a variety of seeds, nuts, grains and fruits. The cereal comes in a canister that’s signed by the person who mixed it and guaranteed to be fresh, healthy and delicious.
After the jump more about the world of $16 cereal you never knew existed!
ok ok so in total for my canister of [Me] & Goji cereal I spent $16.70… I’m justifuing this because it has more cereal than comes in the average box, I had to pay for shipping and I added the $1 option to offset the carbon footprint from it… but mostly because it’s fully custimizable and the descriptions make everything sound wonderful!
I plan on eating my cereal (appropriately named “Hawkes Sauce”) over another, cheaper one like Special K or Total to make it last longer. Below is my recipe (with the yummy descriptions attached), add some soy milk and ta da! Don’t tell me you can’t see why it’s so tempting!
Artisanal Cereal– this base is the background of the idea behind [me] & goji: traditional, crunchy cereal flakes that americans love combined with the nutritional righteousness of raw rolled flakes found in muesli (a popular european-style cereal). add dried fruits, nuts and seeds to this base and experience the future of cereal, today. buckle up!
Multigrain Flakes – you know there are no grains like whole grains. and the only thing better than whole grains is multiple whole grains packed into one little flake. we got ya covered. simple, healthy, and tasty, these flakes go well with any combination of nuts, seeds, and fruits you can muster up.
Goji Berries – though in its infancy in western culture, this Tibetan superfruit from the Himalayas may turn out to be the healthiest food on earth. packed with dizzying amounts of nutrients and phytochemicals, this functional fruit has a mild, tangy taste that is slightly sweet and sour. viva la goji health benefits: 11 essential and 22 trace dietary minerals – Rich in antioxidants, particularly carotenoids such as beta-carotene and zeaxanthin – 18 amino acids – 6 essential vitamins – 8 polysaccharides and 6 monosaccharides – 5 unsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid beta-sitosterol and other phytosterols – 5 carotenoids including beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, lutein, lycopene and cryptoxanthin, a xanthophylls – numerous phenolic pigments
Currant – differing from traditional currants, these black pearls have suffered through centuries of identity crisis. boasting a fierce Napoleonic complex, they pack all the taste and nutrition of their larger, Thompson siblings…proving, once again, it’s not the size of the raisin in the bowl… Main health benefits: A top source of boron — A top source of Polyphenolic phytonutrients promote oral hygiene – Preserves eyesight – High in iron, potassium, calcium and certain B vitamins – No cholesterol or fat – Good source of quick, natural energy – World’s Healthiest Foods List
Flax Seed – an estimated 95% of the population is lacking in LNA, a vital fatty acid with anti-cancer and heart benefits. da-da-da-daaaaa (excuse our singing) flax to the rescue! flax and chia seeds are the highest LNA foods in the world. we flax daily. do you flax? Health benefits: Big-time monounsaturated (good) fats – High in magnesium, protein, and copper – Great natural energy source
Amaranth – once a staple of Aztec royalty, this pseudo-grain has reemerged into main-grain culture with its energizing health benefits and nutty, subtly spicy flavor. add them to other grains to boost your lysine levels. the Aztecs were on to something, sans the human sacrificing thing. Main health benefits: Highest source of Lysine of all our grains – Big-time protein and dietary fiber – High in phytosterols – NO GLUTEN
Almonds – if a doctor said you needed more fat to be healthy, would you get a second opinion? well, here it is: eat almonds. Almonds–actually a fruit–are high in monounsaturated fat (the good fat), which may reduce the risk of heart disease. mmmm…paradox never tasted so good. Health benefits: Big-time protein, fiber and essential monosaturated fats – Great for active people – High in vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, calcium and iron
