Morgan Holzer was born in a little town in Massachusetts with a hole in her head and a hole in her heart. No joke. Ever since she has been attempting to fill them up: she collects random trivial tidbits for her brain and stockpiles music for her heart. A Boston-girl to the core, she does get a little twinge of pride if you call her a New Yorker. Just don't ask her to root for the Yankees.

An Interview with U.S. Air Guitar Competitor Windhammer

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the Air Guitar National Championships at Irving Plaza in New York City. I had previously attended smaller regional qualifiers, but this was definitely something else. Judged on technical merit, stage presence, and “airness,” this is a fierce competition wherein the winner goes to Finland to represent the… Read More

Double Rainbow Mix

It’s been a month since I first laid eyes on the Double Rainbow video, and by now I hope you have all seen it as well. But just in case, let me break it down for you. Double Rainbow is, in my humble opinion, the greatest thing to come out of the internet this year… Read More

Newport Folk Festival Mix

I spent this past weekend in Rhode Island at the Newport Folk Festival. I am pretty exhausted, but I wanted to get you kids this mix as soon as humanly possible. Which turns out to be close to midnight when the goal was bed by ten. So you won’t get much commentary here (maybe one… Read More

10 Songs For 100 Days Of Oil Spill

Tomorrow marks 100 days since the BP oil spill in the gulf. I know they “successfully” capped it, but as long as that sucker is still leaking, I’m saying there is still an oil spill. But this disaster got me thinking a lot about the good old days of folk – when popular music regularly included anthems… Read More

I Could Write About Old Spice Forever [updated]

There is no way you read my post yesterday about the Old Spice Guy and didn’t immediately fall in love with him. But did you also fall in love with Isaiah Mustafa himself? Maybe not. But I am nothing if not a facilitator of internet awesome (new popten business card title, anyone?) so feast your eyes… Read More

Old Spice Love Affair

Unless you have been living under a rock, you are quite familiar with the body (of work) of Isaiah Mustafa. Mustafa is a former wide-receiver in the NFL, and currently has a talent contract with NBC. He might be better known to you as The Old Spice Guy (heretofore known in this post as OSG). But just in… Read More

The Quintessential Fourth of July Mix

America Is Not The World by Morrissey came on my shuffle the other day, and I thought “Gee, that would be a humorous song to put on a Fourth of July mix, if only I had one of those.” And then I realized how easy it would be to accomplish just that. I think… Read More

Interview with Pencils of Promise founder Adam Braun

I thought it was high time that Popten covered a new type of pop culture. Though this time the pop stands for Pencils of Promise, a New York-based non-profit focused on – amongst other things – early education and empowering a new generation of passionate young leaders to create profound good. Pencils of Promise, or PoP, opened… Read More

A Token Of Gratitude

Last night I realized something awful. I had mistakenly deleted 22 folders of music. Permanently. This is what I get for procrastinating and working on mixes at 3am. I was raised to be a loyal PC girl, so no Mac Time Machine for me. Needless to say, I was pretty devastated. I posted an account of my… Read More

Taxes are no fun. But aren’t you glad you are all done with them? Because it means refund time! So consider this your first of hopefully several, a mix about money, taxes, and stickin’ it to the man. Here are my top ten money/tax-related songs.

Top Ten Worst Band Names From the Warped Tour 2010

When I was in my formative high school days, going to the Warped Tour was a highlight of the summer. Just old enough to drive, we’d pile about 9 bros and skateboards into mom-duke’s Ford Exploder and drive at high speed to Fitchburg or some other pseudo-municipality in middle Massachusetts, blasting Rage Against The Machine and… Read More
