Morgan’s March 2009 Mix

It’s a week into March. So that means that South by Southwest is in less than a week! You can all do your part in making sure I have the best possible time by keeping me (and Jeff/Keith/Sarah) in the top 20 here: That’s right, I’m gonna rock out at karaoke. Hopefully. A lot of bands are on here simply because I am wicked psyched to see them at SXSW, and for no other reason but that. Speaking of which, Keith recently put up a good blog post about a band he is excited for, which made it easier for me to cut them out and just link to: You’ll find this mix runs a little long, but believe me, this morning it was about 20 songs longer. And I can’t forget to give a long distance high five to Tom, for yet again creating great cover art for my mix.

And now that business is out of the way… Click through for a track list and a link to stream.

I’m getting towards the end of Andrew Bird for now. Though I may have one or two left in me, so no promises. I also liked how the titles of Bird and Clem Snide fit together. Plus he is playing at SXSW. (Hope you’re ready for that theme, you’ve been warned.) Girls- playing SXSW. (See how it works, now?)

Matt and Kim were the band from last month’s mix with the most positive feedback, so thanks again to Aubrey for that find. (Need I mention they’ll be in Austin? They will be…) Black Lips, playing SXSW, as is Camera Obscura. Saw them down at the South Street Seaport a few summers ago. Looking forward to seeing them again.

J. Tillman (drummer of Fleet Foxes) has a great side project. I love this song. He’ll also fly solo at SXSW. Here We Go Magic… It is songs like this that make me want to see a band live.

Harlem Shakes, playing SXSW. As are Handsome Furs, Vetiver, Mt St Helens Vietnam Band, and Dent May. All exciting. The BPA is aka Brighton Port Authority is aka a side-project of Fatboy Slim. Before you groan, this track has two things going for it- its title, and the fact that it’s been touched by Emmy the Great. Anything she does is automatic gold in my book.

Ben Kweller is in there strickly for Kiki. Been about seven or so years since we used to listen to him on repeat, was glad when i came across this track.

Thermals, SXSW. Von Bondies, SXSW. M.Ward, doing a platinum badge only thing at SXSW. Which made that day way cooler. And now we have a nice little lull with non-Austin-bound bands. The Sufjan track is off of the compilation Dark Was The Night. Look into it, if you haven’t already. It is good. I also really love that Cymbals Eat Guitars songs. I also really like that for a band name.

The Secret Life of Sofia was giving away a free EP on their site if you signed up for their mailing. Really pretty stuff. I found out after I was hooked that they are playing SXSW. So are Jason Isbell (formerly of DBT) and Fanfarlo. I don’t know much about The Airborne Toxic Event, besides that they are buzzy, and are playing a Rachael Ray (yeah you read that right) afternoon showcase at Maggie Mae’s with Ra Ra Riot and The Thermals, amongst others, so I thought I should check them out.

Tim Fite released a free album on his site on Valentines Day. I think it might still be up.

And now that I’ve finished this recap, I can begin stressing about the logistical nightmare it will be to see everyone I intend on seeing and not absolutely lose my mind. At which point I will work on my “Every Band I Saw at SXSW In The Order I Saw Them In” Mix of 2009. Till then, enjoy this:
