Cover Mix #5 – Valentine’s Day Edition
While listening to the newly acquired version of If I Fell by Elliott Smith this afternoon, I pondered a Valentine’s Day edition cover mix. Turns out I have a crazy amount love-oriented covers that have yet to make it on any official mix. Some are admittedly not the best cuts or quality in the world, but I thought that something special about each one warranted my ignoring the quality. So here we go, with 14 love covers in honor of the 14th day of February.

You can stream the following tracks here
Rogue Wave – Everyday (Buddy Holly)
Just got this one and I love it. When I was a kid I always loved the James Taylor version of this song.
Colin Meloy – Cupid (Sam Cooke)
Sometimes it’s hard for me to not think Colin Meloy is just being indulgent with his covers projects, but I do like this one…
Tiffany – I Saw Him Standing There (The Beatles)
I remember being a kid and having an argument with my dad about whether Tiffany’s songs were originals. Needless to say, I lost.
The Vines – Ms Jackson (Outkast)
Before you guffaw, this is totally a love song. Listen to it again.
Elliott Smith – If I Fell (The Beatles)
The inspiration for this mix.
Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne – Kisses Sweeter Than Wine (The Weavers)
Gets a little monotonous towards the end, but still great.
Nickelback – Love Will Keep Us Together (Captain and Tennille)
Sound quality on the first verse is a little lackluster to say the least, but it picks up in the middle.
Ray Lamontagne and Damien Rice – To Love Somebody (The Bee Gees)
Short but sweet.
Cat Power – Sea of Love (Phil Phillips)
I like this version better than any other I’ve heard (and there are a bunch out there.)
Chris Cornell – Thank You (Led Zeppelin)
I actually like Chris Cornell sometimes, believe it or not. This is one of those.
Katy Perry – Head Over Heals (Tears for Fears)
God, Katy Perry grates on my nerves, but she is tolerable almost all the way through on this one.
Ziggy Marley – Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers)
I could make an entire mix of covers of this song. Not my favorite version, but fit the best.
Counting Crows – You Were Always on My Mind (Willie Nelson)
It cuts off after the first verse, but I couldn’t resist.
Peter Gabriel – Book of Love (Magnetic Fields)
